7岁时入济南市正宗救济会贫民学校、济南省立第二实验小学读书。

1948年考入济南市立第1 中学（今：济南二中），三个月即辍学参加革命，到烈士纪念塔委员会浮雕组当通讯员。

1950年参加中国人民解放军第三野战军二十四军教导团。

1951年调济南话剧团当演员，嗣后又到济南市南城根小学任教导员。

韩美林热心社会公益事业，多次向国内外捐资赈灾助学，在全国各地捐赠了十几个希望小学。为了更好地弘扬奥运精神，2009年，由北京奥组委牵头、他个人出资，在全国的东、西、南、北、中5 个方位的贫困地区建立了5所希望小学，分别以他为北京奥运会设计的5 个福娃的名字命名，即浙江省丽水市莲都区峰源乡中心小学（福娃贝贝希望小学）、甘肃省敦煌市肃州镇南阴沟 小学（福娃欢欢希望小学）、云南省建水县临安镇罗卜甸村小学（福娃晶晶希望小学）、内蒙古自治区土默特左旗蒙古族学校（福娃妮妮希望小学）、湖南省桃源县马宗岭乡兴安小学（福娃迎迎希望小学）。他曾将数千件艺术作品捐赠给国家。2011年12月，在国家博物馆举办的韩美林艺术大展闭幕之际，他又向国家博物馆捐赠20件包含多个门类的艺术作品。

 第1 座韩美林艺术馆于2005年建在杭州，座落 在杭州植物园里面；第二座韩美林艺术馆于2008年建在北京，座落 在通州区梨园内，是主题公园的1 部分。第三座银川韩美林艺术馆则建在宁夏银川贺兰山岩画风景区。

杭州韩美林艺术馆，位于杭州植物园分类区北面，总用地面积为8925平方米，建筑占地面积1969平方米，建筑总面积为4207平方米，其中主馆建筑面积为3677平方米，于9月30日建成，2005年10月19日正式开馆。全国政协副主席王忠禹等领导为艺术馆揭幕。全国政协副主席、中共地方 统战部部长刘延东为艺术馆开馆发来贺信。中国作家协会党组书记金炳华，全国政协常委、中国文联副主席冯骥才致辞。国家有关部委、省市有关单位，和 来自文明 、艺术、旧事 等领域的嘉宾共300余人参加开馆典礼 。

座落 于北京市通州区梨园镇主题公园内的韩美林艺术馆于2006年4月18日破土动工，历时两年竣工。建筑面积近万平方米的艺术馆，主体建筑为灰白色基调，内部装修简约、空间开阔。馆藏艺术品包括韩美林先生捐赠的绘画、书法、雕塑、民间工艺品等2000件艺术作品。这些作品继承了我国优秀文明 的传统，结合古代 艺术的元素，构成 了独具特色的思辨风格与表现情势 。它与2005年10月19日落成的杭州韩美林艺术馆分别位于举世出名 的京杭大运河的首尾两端。连接两座艺术馆的纽带，就是有着千年历史的京杭大运河。两个艺术馆的建成，丰富了我国的运河文明 ，为运河文明 的申遗提供了宝贵的历史与文明 根据 。

银川韩美林艺术馆是国内第三座以韩美林个人作品为主题的艺术馆。其中贺兰山岩画更与他有着多年的渊源，为了寻觅 艺术创作的灵感，从上个世纪80年代起，韩美林先生前后 七次来到贺兰山岩画。他说“看到岩画，总有1 种创作的激情，岩画带给我艺术上的启发是巨大的。”贺兰山岩画成为了他艺术创作的1 个重要转机 点。怀着对贺兰山岩画的深厚感情，韩美林先生决定在宁夏银川建筑 中国第三座韩美林艺术馆。在2012年8月30日银川韩美林艺术馆奠基典礼 上，还将他创作的数千件艺术作品捐赠给银川市政府。

韩美林艺术馆是2012年银川市本级重点项目之1 ，建设规模5980平方米，次要 用于韩美林大师作品的陈列、展现 和创作。艺术馆分为三个区六个厅，三个区分别是观展区、创作区和办公区，六个厅分别为展厅1 、展厅二、展厅三、临时展厅、笔会厅和报告厅。各个展厅陈展内容各有特色，以陶艺、雕塑、书法与绘画为主，全面零碎 地展现 了韩美林先生的艺术成就及多方面的艺术才华和无穷 的创造力，为艺术爱好者们提供了参观、交流、互动的平台。
